DIY Barn Door Shelving Unit: Part 1
I've been putting this post off for a while now because I wanted Guy to write a section on HOW he made the barn door and the barn door hardware but I'm just going to have that be a completely separate blog post since my husband is currently tied up in a host of other projects (thanks to me :) ) And since I've had many people ask me to reveal this fun project, I thought what the heck! So without further ado here is our DIY barn door shelving unit from start to finish.
P.S. These "before" pictures are awful because we were also working on ANOTHER DIY project (imagine that) that will eventually be a blog post in and of itself but for now just focus on the wall shelving unit.

As you can see our kids are heavily involved in our DIY projects...it's just the way life is these days!
So as you can see, we took all the individual shelves out and painted this bad boy white. There was no "easy" way to do this other than just rolling on a couple layers of paint. It was tedious and not the funnest project but the end result was worth the work!
Once we painted the shelving unit and the shelves themselves, Guy started on building the barn door and the hardware. One thing I will say about that (because a lot of people have asked us) why we decided to make our own hardware is because if you are like us and have never researched the price of barn door hardware, then you don't know that it's extremely expensive (like $200 expensive...ya!). And that was just something we were not willing to spend on this project so Guy...being the logical and practical man that he is, decided to figure out how to make his own! I promise you I will have a "how to" blog post up on that very soon but for now you will just have to admire his craftsmanship in anticipation!

I was working with A LOT of shelving space when designing this, and I knew that a lot of this space needed to be utilized for organizing toys and arts and craft items but I didn't want that stuff to be out in the open so that's why I chose to have Guy build a barn door. I wanted all those unappealing items to be easily hidden and out of site/out of reach. I knew that with having little ones around constantly I didn't want the markers, crayons, paint, and paper to be reachable or easily accessible so this created the perfect option for that. Plus, it allowed me to be able to use those extra shelves to add my cutsie decor and still keep the charm I was wanting in the basement.
