ORC Week 3: Creating An Open Concept Dining Area

It’s week 3 here for the One Room Challenge! As if you haven’t seen what this space looked like in WEEK 1 [here], then you won’t know what a huge difference this new arrangement makes. And if you haven’t seen our plans for this space from WEEK 2 [here] then you might think this is the end of our makeover but IT’S NOT!

ORC Week 3: Creating An Open Concept Dining Area

I have been wanting to move the table to this part of the room for the longest time because it just MAKES SENSE to use this window bench. And bonus it gives us a large open space here in the center of the dining room that for so long was crowded with this table and chairs. However, so many people have since asked…but what about the chandelier in the middle of the room?

The plan with that is to get a new light that swags over to the center of the dining room table, since this is our only hard wired light in this space we are kind of limited on what we can do but we want to keep some sort of chandelier in this space to give us that look and feel of something a bit more grand while still remaining simple.

We also have plans to get a new table and chairs. While this table has served us well and was one that my husband built for us when we first moved into this house, it’s simply a tad too long for this space. When he originally built it I designed it to be long and skinny so that it wouldn’t take up more space than it already did when it was in the center of the dining room but now that it’s moved over, the length creates issues when trying to squeeze through the sides with the lockers. Also the placement of the legs makes it difficult to slide in and out so we need something that is going to have legs towards the center so that they don’t impede that getting in and out aspect that is essential for this design. Again, you can see the style we are going for from WEEK 2’s post.

Well, that’s all the progress we’ve got for you folks! Thank you for stopping by! We can’t wait to share with you next week’s progress and make sure to follow us on instagram (@kindredhomestead) for daily updates on projects we are doing around the house!
