Our Bedroom Makeover: Why We Skipped the Color Drench Trend

There’s something about giving a space a fresh start—especially one as personal and sacred as a bedroom. This room has quietly waited its turn while we tackled more pressing projects around the house. But with a little patience and a lot of intention, it’s finally starting to feel like the restful retreat we always imagined.

We didn’t overhaul the entire room from scratch. In fact, it was more of a slow-and-steady makeover—with a few details still left to wrap up. The sconces still need to be hardwired in, and I’ve got my eye out for the just right window treatments. But even still, the transformation has already made such a difference in how this space feels. And that was always the goal. Checkout our styling inspiration here!

As we shared peeks into the process, one question kept popping up:

why didn’t we color drench the room?

It’s a trend we love and admire in so many spaces… so let’s talk about why we chose to skip it in ours.

A Light Touch for a Light-Limited Room

We landed on Light Blue by Farrow & Ball for the walls (color-matched at Home Depot for practicality’s sake). It’s a soft, gray-leaning blue that adds depth without feeling heavy. And while we considered taking it up over the trim and ceiling for that enveloping, color-drenched effect… in the end, I just couldn’t commit.

This room doesn’t get much natural light—at least not consistently. It stays fairly dim throughout the day, only catching the warmest glow in the late afternoon. And our upstairs ceilings are just 8 feet tall.

In a space like this, drenching everything in color has the potential to make it feel smaller and a bit closed in.

I love the drama of color-drenched rooms in theory, but here, it felt like too much of a risk. So we opted for a more restrained approach. The color still adds mood and softness, but the white trim and ceiling help the room feel open and airy—just what we needed for a space meant for rest.

Seeing the Room as a Whole

One of my favorite things about this refresh has been finally seeing the room come together as a whole with styling. I shared a wide-angle video on Instagram, and it really captures how the cozy little corners connect—the bed, the seating nook, the layers of texture and tone.

Photos are lovely, but there’s something about seeing a space move that brings it to life.

A Work in Progress, and That’s Okay

Is the room finished? Not quite.

But does it feel calm, grounded, and like us? Absolutely.

Sometimes the best spaces aren’t the ones that follow trends or chase perfection—but the ones that listen to the light, honor the room’s limits, and grow slowly over time. This bedroom has already become one of our favorite places to land, even with a few projects still lingering.

And that’s the kind of beauty we’re after—quiet, lived-in, and deeply personal.
