Gender Neutral Shared Space with PBK & PB Teen
It’s that time friends…let’s dust the cobwebs and dust bunnies out from all the cracks and crevices of our homes and let’s enjoy this beautiful spring weather! Am I right? We’ve recently begun the spring cleaning a bit early this year with a couple room refreshes. One being the baby’s room that we started redoing this winter and finally were able to put all the finishing touches on it just in time for baby (see room HERE). With the addition of the baby this winter, we needed to shift things around a bit to accommodate for the growth. In order to do that we had to combine our oldest daughter and son into the same room . As you can imagine that wasn’t exactly an exciting endeavor for our oldest who had a comfy room to herself. So in order to brighten things up for her we made a few fun modifications to their shared space.
I am super excited to have partnered with Pottery Barn Kids and PB Teen on this gender neutral space; together they allowed us to creatively and magically design a space that fit both kids needs. My intention and desire for this room was to give both kids a fun “learning & growing” corner, as well as, a sweet and gender neutral bedding refresh that complimented my daughters femininity with my sons “rough and tumble” character. It am so excited with how it all turned out! I have linked all the product at the bottom of this post!
Gender Neutral Shared Space with PBK & PB Teen
Like I mentioned earlier, this space was difficult to swing in regards to the opposite gender aspect. But with the help of PB Teen and Pottery Barn Kids, I was able to cohesively create a space that both of my daughter and son feel like represents them individually.
What I love most about both of these companies is that they have timeless pieces that can be used for the entire family; they aren’t just limited to young kids or teen age kids rooms, they are pieces that can be shared throughout the home.
When designing this little “learning corner” I wanted to make it so my kids felt like they were “big kids” doing “BIG things.” I wanted them to feel as though they were important enough to have a space that they could create in or learn in. Having this Metal Play Table and chair set brought the room down to their size and gave them a feeling of ownership of the space, which has been so fun to watch them explore in.
Adding functional texture to this space was another key feature that Pottery Barn Kids helped me to achieve. They have such a wide variety of storage bins and baskets that make creating functional play and storage areas possible. We received a handful of these white washed baskets and have them placed all throughout this room, as well as, around other areas of the house. They can be used as storage for books and other items or for hanging on the wall as another piece of wall decor!
In addition to these fun white washed baskets, I just had to get my hands on these fun metallic woven wool bins that make blanket and pillow storage easy and cute. Check them out below!
My overall desire for this space was a simple and easy bedding refresh that would beautifully represent and portray each gender without making it too “boyish” or too “girly.” Being able to work alongside both PB Teen and PBK to mix and match bedding to create that beautiful neutrality, while staying within this farmhouse theme, could not have been more seamless. Being able to layer the different textures and patterns gave this simple space dimension while catering to both genders.

Creating a bit of femininity within this space was super challenging because I didn’t want it to be overboard. So I had to think of how I could subtly throw in a bit of whimsical-ness for my daughters sake without creating an all out foofy mess (if you know what I mean). And I loved how I was able to do that by adding in an additional layer to the bedding by using the Sadie Ruffle Sheet Set in white , the Pretty Pleats Shams, and different crocheted throws.
And last but certainly not least, I loved adding a bit of dimension to the room by adding in this fun Idina Chandelier, as well as, this Round Metal Framed Mirror. And what can I say, the kids absolutely love these two features of their new room. It gives it the magical, mystery characteristic that I so desired for this space.
