Adding Wall Texture in 2022

Wanting to add texture to your wall or walls but don’t know where to start? Let’s dive into this topic and talk about what’s going on in 2022!

What I’m loving about the way design is moving these days, is there is a plethora of options available to you when it comes to adding texture to your walls. Gone are the days where all you had to choose from was horizontal shiplap! Today we have an expansive list of options and I’m about to break then all down for you!

Box Moulding or Picture Moulding

This form of wall texture is a timeless and has been around for centuries, dating back to the 18th century. Plainly speaking, picture moulding is traditional moulding placed in the shape of boxes or rectangles (mimicking picture frames) on your walls to create an elevated, charmed look. You can use it on the whole wall or as wainscoting. It is forever a timeless wall feature that will never go out of style.

Beadboard

Beadboard can be described as, evenly spaced vertical wooden tongue and grove planks interlocked with ridges or “beads” between each one. According to Architect Patrick Ahearn in an article called “To Beadboard or Not to Beadboard” he says,

“Beadboard originated in England four centuries ago with the practical purpose of keeping heat inside the house, and outside dampness at bay. It is said that early English settlers brought the design to the U.S. to remind them of the “history and architectural character” of the homes they left behind.” (source link here)

Today, we see this decorative wall paneling used in all sorts of styles. It can be used in a cottage, in a coastal scene, as wainscoting in an entry way with a peg rail for hanging coats and such. This totally versatile and cozy wall texture holds the test of time and is one of my favorite.

Roman Clay

If you haven’t heard of Roman Clay, then I might just blow your mind right now because this could be your solution to upgrading your walls without a ton of hassle.

According to Portola Paints,

“Roman Clay is an eco-friendly plaster finish ideal for smooth interior walls. Applied using a putty knife, Roman Clay provides a versatile finish able to achieve a wide range of stone, stucco and marble-like effects, making it a perfect fit in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Wallpaper

This goes without an explanation I think. But believe it or not (or want to believe it or not), wallpaper has made a HUGE comeback! And I am here for it. I love wallpaper that just adds a slight variation of texture and I love wallpaper that has a classic standout design.

Use it on one wall, all your walls, or above wainscoting for a dual textured look. We know that wallpaper is classic and timeless, so let’s embrace it!
